And the winner is …

George decided that Deb must be the winner because she realizes that there is more to being a dog then just laying around and keeping me company. There is the guarding, chasing and eating stuff too.
So Deb if you will please email me your address George and I will mail off your thread ravels later today when we go for our walk by the lake. You really should show us what you use them for when you get a chance.
Thanks for playing along and I hope everyone stays cool. It was 110 here yesterday. IMG_1462

Thankful Thursday

Today I am thankful. I am thankful everyday but today I am thankful to give away ravels. You know I am a hand dyer, I dye a little every day just for you. And because I dye so much and so often I get lots of thread ravels. Beautiful colored thread bits.

Leave me a funny and innovative comment, either about how you use these leftovers or how you plan on using these bonus gifts of dyeing, and George will pick out a winner to receive a free bag of thread ravels. I tried to get the birds in my area to use these in their nests, but I guess they are color blind.
I love to hear from you, if you have any questions that you would like to ask, go ahead ask away and I will try to blog an answer for you.

Inspiration

Where does your inspiration come from? I am constantly inspired by the world around me. One of the ways I am refreshed and renewed is by my daily walks in the woods with George. In this heat however, we are walking around a man made lake right next door to our little woods.

Here are a few pictures from those walks.

These pictures inspired me to create several new land scape quilts.

I’ll show the quilts when I finish them.

But here are two newer quilts that have also been inspired by prairie grasses.

This quilt “Prairie Grasses” recently sold.

And these three are in the new exhibit currently at the NQM in Paducah KY.

Artist Monday

The idea behind Artist Monday is to share with you some of the great people I meet while I am out in the quilt world teaching and traveling.

I have recently returned from teaching at The Quilters Affair in Sisters OR. I had the pleasure of reacquainting myself with Karla Alexander. You probably already know her from her book – Stack the Deck.

Stack-TD-RE-Visited-WEB_lg

Karla’s classroom was directly in front of mine at the high school where we had classes, and our hotel rooms were right next to each other. At a lot of these retreat camp like venues the teachers are introduced on stage usually on the first night after classes. I am almost always first to go up, but at this show there were TWO people in front of me, Bari Ackeman and Karla. So of course we chatted it up waiting in line to go and show off in front of everyone. Karla is a warm and sharing teacher who likes to have a good time.

If you ever get a chance to take Karla’s class don’t pass it up because you will have fun.

Summer help

This is my best buddies daughter Hattie, she is my summer help. She has been terrific, doing all the little and big jobs that I don't want or don't have time to do. She is so much more organized than I am. She could move in and I won't complain at all.Posted by Picasa

A few shots of Sisters Oregon

I love this shot.  My camera stop  the  action of  the propeller out the window of the little plane from Portland to Redmond. Notice the SNOW on the mountains below.
I love airport art. This mural is made of little colored wood. It is on the wall as you exit the airport in Redmond. Very beautiful, it could be a quilt!
I hope everyone had a fabulous 235th Happy Fourth of July.

Artist Monday - Jan Myers Newbury

Today I want to introduce you to Jan Myers Newbury. I meet Jan for the first time this year at the North Carolina Quilt Symposium. I have been a HUGE fan for years. We didn’t get to spend a lot of time together, but I really really liked her as a person. You know how that happens sometimes, you just click. It’s probably the color thing. I love color and so does she. When I am dyeing fabric I can’t wait to see how each piece of fabric is going to turn out and I guess she is the same way.

Anyway, I hope you will visit her site and look around, she makes amazing work. If you ever get a chance to take a workshop with her don’t pass it up.

Hummingbirds

I have a hummingbird nest in MY BACKYARD. It is so cool. I see them coming and going all day. They like to rest and prune their feathers on the dead branches of my lilac bush. It's a good thing I never got around to trimming up those branches this year.

The nest is in the oak tree that hangs over my garden. It is only about 2-3 inches tall and about 3-4 inches wide.

Doesn't that look like batting!! It was meant to be in my back yard. I am going to try to get a picture of it in the nest. Wish me luck.

Design Wall Friday

This month while teaching in NC I got to meet so many interesting people who’s work I have admired.
Today I'd like to share with you my new friend Lesley Riley. She sent me a picture of one of her inspiration boards and this is what she has to say about it.
InspirationBoard
I'm a very visual person, so I like to surround myself with color and
ideas and, I'll be honest, work that I'd love to steal or copy! I figure
if I look at it long enough it will ooze into me and become the influence
that it's meant to be. I also put my own work (or photos of) up there for
these three reasons:
Reminders of big accomplishments
Work that I'd like to investigate more
Snippets of an idea I want to explore.

You'll find colors, shapes, and of course quotes and inspiration words of
wisdom that I need to remind myself of regularly.

One of the problems I have with an inspiration board is that over time,
things on it can become, what I refer to as, "part of the landscape." In
otherwords, you see it everyday so it no longer stands out. If there's
smomething on the board that doesn't leap out every time I look at it -
off it goes.

What remains, over time, form a part of my visual language. What is on
that board are ideas and/or symbols that truly speak to me. Using this
process of distillation,  it truly serves as an inspiration board because
it's something I can turn to again and again to uncover the work that lies
inside me.

Lesley
I really like her point of view and realize that I do many of the same things as far as surround myself with visual stimulation.
You can view more of Lesley’s work on her webpage at http://www.lesleyriley.com/
